Steven Klein

Steven Klein (born 1965) is an American photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist widely regarded as one of the most influential image-makers in contemporary fashion and celebrity culture. Although best known for his photography rather than traditional writing, his visual works have been published extensively and are frequently studied as authored artistic statements. After studying painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, Klein developed a signature style characterized by cinematic staging, stark lighting, and bold explorations of identity, desire, power, and fame.

Klein's editorial work has appeared in W Magazine, Vogue, Interview, i-D, and numerous international publications. He has created iconic portraits and campaigns for Madonna, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and Kylie Jenner, among many others. His long-running creative partnership with Madonna produced the acclaimed art book X-STaTIC PRO=CeSS (2003), one of his most celebrated published projects.

Beyond still imagery, Klein has directed short films and music videos, including projects for Madonna and Lady Gaga, extending his dark, theatrical aesthetic into motion. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and he continues to challenge conventions of beauty and celebrity, blending fashion, art, and social commentary into striking visual narratives.
