📄Benita, an African Romance by H. Rider Haggard follows Benita Clifford, a young woman of English-Portuguese descent who journeys to South Africa with her father in search of a legendary Portuguese treasure hidden in the ruins of ancient Zimbabwe. After their ship sinks, they are taken to a mysterious inland lake ruled by the Makalanga people, who prophesy Benita's coming. There she is torn between two suitors: the noble English Captain Seymour and the ruthless, treasure-obsessed Jacob Meyer. Guided by the ghostly spirit of her ancestress, Benita uncovers the hidden treasure, escapes danger, resolves the love triangle, and finds both fortune and true love.
