The Cricket on the Hearth

The Cricket on the Hearth

The Cricket on the Hearth, subtitled "A Fairy Tale of Home," is Charles Dickens's 1845 Christmas novella. Set in an English village, it follows kindly carrier John Peerybingle, his young wife Dot, and their baby, whose modest home is blessed by a chirping cricket believed to guard the household's fortunes. When John comes to suspect Dot of infidelity with a mysterious elderly lodger, domestic happiness hangs in the balance. Through misunderstandings and timely revelations, the truth emerges: the stranger is Edward Plummer in disguise, returned to wed his beloved May Fielding. John and Dot reconcile, and the miserly Tackleton reforms, in a heartwarming celebration of love, trust, and home.
