"The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry tells the story of Della and Jim, a young married couple who are poor but deeply devoted to each other. With Christmas approaching, each secretly sacrifices their most treasured possession to buy the other a gift. Della sells her beautiful long hair to purchase a platinum chain for Jim's prized pocket watch, while Jim sells his watch to buy jeweled combs for Della's hair. Though their gifts become useless, their sacrifices reveal the true depth of their selfless love. O. Henry compares this young couple to the Magi, the wisest of all gift-givers.
