"The Phoenix and the Carpet" by E. Nesbit follows siblings Cyril, Anthea, Robert, and Jane, who accidentally destroy their nursery carpet and buy a mysterious replacement at a bazaar. Hidden inside, they discover a glowing egg that hatches into a magnificent golden Phoenix when it falls into the fire. The vain yet kindly Phoenix reveals the carpet is magical, granting wishes by transporting them wherever they desire. The children embark on fantastical adventures—visiting desert islands, foreign castles, and a witch's cottage—while facing humorous mishaps along the way. Ultimately, the Phoenix must return to its egg, bidding the children a touching farewell.
