The Painted Veil

The Painted Veil

The Painted Veil, by W. Somerset Maugham, tells the story of Kitty Fane, a beautiful but shallow Englishwoman who marries bacteriologist Walter Fane for convenience. After Walter discovers her affair with charming diplomat Charles Townsend, he forces her to accompany him to a cholera-ravaged town in mainland China. Amid suffering and death, Kitty begins a profound spiritual transformation, working in a convent and recognizing her own vanity and Townsend's hollowness. When tragedy strikes, she emerges stronger and wiser. Drawing its title from Shelley's poetry, the novel explores themes of redemption, self-discovery, and the enduring search for meaning beyond illusion.
