Time and the Gods

Time and the Gods

"Time and the Gods" (1906) by Lord Dunsany is a collection of fantasy tales that expands the mythos introduced in "The Gods of Pegāna." Written in biblical, incantatory prose, the stories chronicle the whims of deities who create, cherish, and abandon worlds at their pleasure. Time emerges as the ultimate power—companion, jester, and eventual conqueror of the gods themselves. Through dreamlike vignettes, Dunsany meditates on creation, mortality, pride, and inevitable decline, revealing that even divinity must bow before Time. Haunting and poetic, the book profoundly influenced later fantasists such as H.P. Lovecraft and J.R.R. Tolkien.
