Amy Foster

Amy Foster

"Amy Foster" is a short story by Joseph Conrad, published in 1901. It tells the tragic tale of Yanko Goorall, an Eastern European immigrant shipwrecked on the English coast. Unable to speak the language, he faces fear, suspicion, and cruelty from local villagers. Only Amy Foster, a humble servant girl, shows him kindness. Despite social disapproval, they marry and have a child. However, when Yanko falls gravely ill and deliriously pleads for water in his native tongue, a terrified Amy flees with their baby. Yanko dies alone, a poignant victim of isolation, xenophobia, and the barriers of cultural misunderstanding.
