Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen's satirical novel published posthumously in 1817, follows Catherine Morland, an innocent young woman with a passionate love for Gothic novels. Invited to Bath, she meets the charming Henry Tilney and the scheming Isabella Thorpe. When Henry's father, General Tilney, invites her to his estate, Northanger Abbey, Catherine's imagination—fueled by Gothic fiction—leads her to suspect the General of murdering his wife. Her fanciful accusations embarrass her, teaching her to distinguish fiction from reality. Though the General initially welcomes her for her supposed wealth and later casts her out, Catherine eventually wins Henry's heart, and the couple happily marries.
