On a remote island in the Malay Archipelago, American scientist Professor Maxon conducts secret experiments to create artificial human life. His laboratory produces a band of grotesque monsters, until his thirteenth creation—Number Thirteen—emerges as a physically perfect being with an innocent, childlike mind. When Maxon's beautiful daughter Virginia arrives on the island, Number Thirteen falls deeply in love with her. As treacherous assistant Dr. von Horn schemes for Virginia's hand and murderous pirates threaten the compound, the soulless creatures wreak havoc. Number Thirteen must prove his humanity and worth, battling foes and his own strange origins to win Virginia's love.
