The Two Towers, the second volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, follows the Fellowship after its breaking. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli pursue orcs across Rohan to rescue Merry and Pippin, who escape into Fangorn Forest and ally with the tree-like Ents. Gandalf returns as the White, and the heroes defend Helm's Deep against Saruman's armies. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam press toward Mordor, guided by the treacherous Gollum. Betrayed at last, Frodo falls to the giant spider Shelob, and Sam must decide whether to complete the quest alone with the Ring entrusted to his keeping.
