"The Rose and the Ring" by William Makepeace Thackeray is a satirical fairy tale set in the imaginary kingdoms of Paflagonia and Crim Tartary. When the fairy Blackstick gifts a magical rose and ring that make their bearers irresistibly charming, vanity and deception ensue. Princess Angelica possesses the rose; Prince Bulbo holds the ring. Giglio, the exiled heir of Paflagonia, loses his betrothed Angelica to Bulbo but eventually gains both magic treasures. However, discovering that charms cannot compel genuine affection, he discards them and marries Rosalba, who loves him truly. Thackeray's tale humorously mocks snobbery, court intrigue, and hollow social values.
