Jude the Obscure

Jude the Obscure, Thomas Hardy's final novel published in 1895, follows Jude Fawley, a poor stonemason in rural Wessex who dreams of studying at Christminster university. His ambitions are crushed by rigid class barriers and his impulsive marriage to Arabella Donn, a deceiving barmaid. Jude later falls in love with his cousin Sue Bridehead, an intelligent but unconventional woman, and they live together without marrying, defying Victorian social norms. Their relationship brings tragedy and social ostracism, culminating in a devastating family catastrophe. The novel powerfully critiques marriage, class, education, and religion, provoking such public outrage that Hardy abandoned fiction forever.
