Scenes of Clerical Life

Scenes of Clerical Life

"Scenes of Clerical Life" (1858) is George Eliot's first work of fiction, comprising three linked stories—"The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton," "Mr Gilfil's Love-Story," and "Janet's Repentance"—set in the fictional Midlands town of Milby. Through compassionate, realistic portraits of Anglican clergymen and their communities, Eliot explores provincial life, religious upheaval, and everyday human struggles. The stories depict ordinary people with tenderness and irony: an ineffectual curate facing family tragedy, an aging priest recalling a lost love, and a woman finding redemption through moral awakening. The collection announced the arrival of a major new literary voice.
