"The Gift of the Magi" is a classic short story by O. Henry. It tells the story of a young, impoverished couple, Della and Jim, who desperately want to buy each other meaningful Christmas presents despite having very little money. Della sells her most treasured possession—her beautiful long hair—to buy a platinum chain for Jim's prized pocket watch. Unbeknownst to her, Jim has sold his watch to purchase elegant combs for Della's hair. When they exchange gifts, they discover the irony of their sacrifices. Yet the story concludes that their selfless love makes them, like the Magi, the wisest of all gift-givers.
