Immensee

Immensee

"Immensee" is a novella by German writer Theodor Storm, first published in 1850. The story follows Reinhard, an old man who reminisces about his youth as he sits alone. Through memories, we learn of his deep childhood bond with Elisabeth—gathering strawberries in the forest and pressing flowers into albums. Reinhard leaves home to study, and during his absence, Elisabeth marries another man. Years later, Reinhard visits the couple at their lakeside estate near Immensee. Unable to reclaim his lost love, he quietly departs, leaving only a poignant song behind. A tender tale of unfulfilled longing, memory, and quiet resignation, it remains one of Storm's most celebrated works.
