The Well at the World’s End

The Well at the World’s End

"The Well at the World's End" (1896) by William Morris is a pioneering fantasy romance. It follows Ralph, youngest son of the King of Upmeads, who leaves home seeking adventure and the legendary Well at the World's End, whose waters grant strength, courage, and long life. On his perilous journey, Ralph faces war, captivity, treacherous lords, and deadly encounters, while meeting the noble lady Ursula. After trials of loyalty, loss, and love, the two quest together and at last find the Well. Written in archaic, chivalric prose, the novel profoundly influenced later fantasy writers, including J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
